How the Pops & Bangs Feature Works

When you choose ZenTune’s Pops & Bangs solution for your customers, we implement the following ECU adjustments:

Injector Timing Optimisation During deceleration, most vehicles cut off fuel injection to prevent fuel from entering the engine. With the Pops & Bangs feature, we recalibrate the ECU to allow a controlled amount of fuel to flow into the combustion chamber after the throttle closes.

Spark Timing Recalibration

We then adjust the ignition timing so that the spark occurs later in the engine cycle—specifically, after Top Dead Centre (TDC). This delayed ignition ignites the remaining fuel during the exhaust stroke, resulting in controlled pops, bangs, and crackles from the exhaust. In some cases, this can even produce visible flames from the tailpipes.

Important Exhaust System Requirements

For optimal results and to prevent potential damage, this feature should only be used on vehicles equipped with a free-flowing exhaust system, such as a decatted or high-flow sports catalytic converter. Standard exhaust systems with factory-fitted catalytic converters are not suitable, as they can overheat or become damaged with this modification.
